Subnautica – Underwater but Certainly not Sunk

Subnautica, Steam,

Its Minecraft With Boats Right?

Subnautica is a futuristic survival game focused on exploring your surroundings in order to make survival more manageable.

you start off with just your survival pod, the spacecraft you were a guest on has somehow managed to plant the captains quarters somewhere in the bottom of a planet engulfed in 99% water. It is your task to take the technology you have on board to somehow establish a base of operations on this new planet. The coolest part of Subnautica vs something like a Minecraft is that there is a story that is uncovered as you explorer and play through the survival mode.

Tricks of Your Trade

you start you game off with just a repair tool, this tool is used to repair anything from your survival pod to a huge submarine built later in the game. as you explorer you discover additional blueprints batteries, scanners, weapons and even more advanced tools. by expanding your tool-set you open up the ability to start building an underwater base and tools to explorer deeper and further from your central hub.

Did You See That Fish?

I have and I have to tell you they are amazing! This game is so visually pleasing that I could just spend hours swimming in the alien ocean waters. The creative director in the game has certainly spend a number of hours perfecting the shaders, design and creativity of the underwater experience. while the concept is much like a Minecraft the graphic are light years ahead.

Resources Lost and Never Found

While the game is incredibly visual and immersive there are a few things that I really wish they had implemented.

Multi-player – First and foremost there is such an opportunity for a multi-player co-op environment. One of the vehicles that is constructed (your large submarine) even calls out that it should be operated with at least 3 people on-board but to date there is not capability to do so. If the development were to take some time and implement a few upgrades to allow multi-player it would a whole new layer the play-ability of this game.

A more Concise Story – The story in Subnautica is immersive and fun to play through, the only complaint I have is that it stops at times and there is no real way, that I have found, to start it back up. You just get a random radio call at what seems to be the most inconvenient time and boom you are on your way back to the base station to check the message. It would be nice to know your next progression step in the story even if they don’t tell you how to get there. right now it just feels very random, like the developer said go swim around my beautiful ocean environment and eventually I will give you something else to do!

We Love the Ocean

As a whole Subnautica in its current state appears to be the start of a fantastic futuristic survival game. the play style and immersive nature of the game keep you coming back for more. The story, though segmented, presents you with a common goal and urge to understand how and why you are stuck on this aquatic sphere full of fish that make a great white shark look like a pet to most. The developers really outdid themselves from a creativity stand point, the fish, environments and structures in the game are all incredibly tantalizing.

Trinity Gamers Gives Subnautica a

7.4

Creativity – 9.0 – The game creators extended themselves creating a number of different fish, reef, plants and structures. the game as a whole is very visually pleasing.
Story – 6.5 – The story does a good job of breaking up the random exploration of the ocean though as mentioned above it is rather broken up and difficult to follow
Game-Play – 8.5 – the game-play is immersive and intuitive. it is easy to find yourself lost in the game for hours based on the number of different things can to or discover.
Graphics – 9.0 – the game is setup nicely so in order to experience the beautiful seascapes you don’t need to have a new GForce 2080. I’ve run it on a 1080TI and I’ve run it on an on-board 630M. both chip-sets were able to consume and process the game without much issue. it obviously looked a little better on the 1080 but both were able to play the game well.
Repeat Play – 4.0 – probably my biggest gripe with the game is its repeat play. there is no multi-player functionality so realistically once you complete the story there is no reason to ever go back. with a multi-player co-op option it would at least give you someone to experience the game with. strive to build a bigger base, explore the ocean deep, catch that big fish with the nasty teeth…you know things friends do together.
